French convenience store chose a B4 baler and now successfully compact their waste to a third of its volume

Cardboard volume got out of control

Supermarkets are traditionally large generators of cardboard waste. The Carrefour City store in the center of Nantes on the French west coast is no exception.

Before installing the baler, staff would fold the empty cardboard boxes and store them in large cage rolls, which were collected and emptied daily. “We had no control about the volumes of cardboard produced in our store” admits Mr. Perez, Store Manager and owner.

The volume of cardboard waste generated on the site amounted to six large cage rolls a week and significantly limited storage capacity and workflow in the stockroom.

Traditionally used in the retail food industry for goods deliveries and waste storage, cage rolls take up a lot of space and limit storage capacities for goods intended for sales. This problem is even more pressing when it comes to businesses located in the city center where square meter prices remain extremely high.

The many cage rolls were quite a binding solution confesses Mr. Perez: “Cage rolls took up a lot of space in the stockroom."

Safety issues also became sensitive due to the number of rolls inside the confined area: "Thanks to the baler, we now use just two cage rolls compared to the six we used before.”

Today, Carrefour efficiently compact their cardboard in 40 kilos bales. The bales take up 70% less space in the stockroom. Since cardboard is now compacted at the waste source, it is also possible to monitor the amount and generate a revenue out of it.

“With the B4 baler, we have succeeded in freeing up space to dedicate to storage of goods and we have also significantly reduced the number of waste collections and subsequently our waste handling bill,” concludes Mr. Perez.

Small footprint baler for outstanding performance

The Bramidan B4 is a single-phase baler that is easy to install and operate. With its low noise level, the B4 baler contributes to a better working environment, storage optimization, and a reduction in operating costs.
