Room for a baler at the Hilton Hotel in Paris
It is in a classical Art Deco style building that the prestigious Hilton Hotel Group has established one of its most exclusive hotels in Paris, just a few steps away from the Champs Elysées, the world's most famous avenue.
With more than 460 rooms and an impressive number of bars, restaurants, lounges and laundries, the Hilton Arc-de-Triomphe Hotel is like a nest with a swarm of bees – humming of activities all day and most of the night. And generating an astonishing amount of waste every day!
George, chief supervisor at the hotel, remembers:
“We were handling more than 20 containers of 700 litres of waste every day. They could only be pulled out on the pavement at 5 am in the morning, when most of the staff was gone! The Hotel is located in a highly touristy area and a lot of people are strolling late at night. Local authorities required we pull the containers out just before their collection. Otherwise, the hotel would be fined”.
Number of containers reduced from 20 to 4…
Last spring, our French distributor Axiome installed a baler Model 4-X 25 in the basement of the Hilton Hotel Arc-de-Triomphe.
“Since then”, says Georges, “we have divided the number of containers by 5. We used to have 20, now we only handle 4 containers a day and the local authorities are much more obliging and less restrictive. The containers can now be pulled out on the pavement at 2:00 am, when the staff is still on duty which is a great help”.
Savings at the bottom line
In Paris you pay approximately 10€ per month for rental of one container and 15€ per day for collection costs. When the Hilton Arc-de-Triomphe Hotel reduced the number of containers, they saved around 6000€ per month in container rental and collection costs. The pay back of the investment for the 4-X 25 was less than 3 months.
As an additional bonus this new way of collecting waste is also environmentally friendly, tells Georges: “Thanks to the baler we now sort our waste types. This means that we actually get paid for some of the waste, which can be used for recycling. So we take care of the environment and save money at the same time”.
